We’re all fuming at the seemingly plan-free club we root for. I’m actually taking the lack of action as an improvement over the last few years’ action-for-the sake-of-action approach.

You certainly didn’t get your wish: if you merely wanted different stop gap pieces instead of Avi, well he was just tendered and signed. I would rather see Avi in LF than Melky as he will have slightly better range and he at least has a decent arm. Putting Avi at DH ensures that the one positive that he DOES have – up trending defensive stats – isn’t utilized at all and that his worst asset is put in the one position where it does the most harm. We can at least hope Renteria isn’t as mind-numbingly stupid as Ventura (Avi’s only Sox manager).

The Sox have 4 gaping holes and 5 little ones and I would bet that no more than one of them will be long-term (4+ years) solved in 2017. I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused.

It does not seem interesting or useful to just write, “Fire everybody” for every article.

The point is, signing stopgap guys serves multiple purposes. It gives you leverage for negotiating because you can at least posture as though you don’t HAVE to sell. Also, as I said, signing these guys can sometimes just give you more ammunition for trades later.

There isn’t going to be a lot of action until the arbitration cases are done. Frazier and Abreu could get moved but their salaries have to shake out first.
